Dr. Malkia Johnson is a licensed clinical social worker and dedicated advocate with over 22 years of experience in mental health and wellness. A native of North Carolina, Dr. Johnson now resides on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where she balances her professional passion with her personal joy—being a devoted wife of 22 years to William Johnson III, mother to two adult children, and proud grandmother of two, both born on the same day a year apart.
As the Director of Counseling Services at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and co-owner of Living Well Counseling and Consulting Services, LLC, Dr. Johnson brings a trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach to both clinical care and leadership. In 2024, she was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Salisbury University School of Social Work, reflecting her commitment to excellence and service.
Throughout her career, Dr. Johnson has contributed to numerous initiatives aimed at reducing mental health disparities and promoting cultural competency. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Mid Shore Behavioral Health and Channel Marker Mental Health and Wellness Support. Her previous board roles include service with NASW-MD and Oshun’s Garden. As a mentor with the NIA Mentoring Initiative, she supports students of color pursuing careers in social work and nursing.
Dr. Johnson is also a member of the Coalition of Cultural Practitioners on the Eastern Shore (COPES), where she uplifts and supports mental health entrepreneurs of color. Her work is grounded in the belief that healing begins when we listen deeply, lead with cultural humility, and build community with care and purpose.
